Diamond is made up of single carbon bonds, with four carbons attached to each carbon molecule. A lot of energy is needed to separate the atoms. This is because covalent bonds are strong. This is the reason why diamond has a high melting point. All the carbon atoms of diamond are said to possess strong chemical bonds with that of the four other carbon atoms, thus making a perfect tetrahedron structure and on throughout the crystal. Each carbon atom in diamond is covalently bonded to 4 other carbon atoms.
